Woodlands Academy hosts 'Women in the Arts'

Works by ceramic artist Undine Brod and artist/photographer Nikki Segarra will be on exhibit at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart through March 18 as part of the 2016 Women in the Arts program, which also will include presentations by each artist.

Brod will present an "artist talk" at 8:30 and 10 a.m. Monday, March 7, at the all-girls college prep high school, 760 East Westleigh Road, Lake Forest. Segarra's presentation will be at 9:15 and 10:45 a.m. Monday, March 14. These programs, in the school's Haggerty Center, are open to the general public free.

Brod spent equal amounts of time growing up in Los Angeles, Seattle and New York City. She earned a master of fine arts degree from The Ohio State University in 2011 and both a bachelor of fine arts in ceramics and a bachelor of arts in interdisciplinary art from the University of Washington in 1998.

Brod also studied at New York University and at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. In addition to exhibiting in the United States and internationally, she has participated in several artist residencies, including Red Lodge Clay Center, the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemét, Hungary, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts and Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan.

Brod has received several grants, awards and top honors in juried shows for recognition of her work. Currently, her home and studio are located in Rhinebeck, New York. More information about the artist is available on Brod's website at www.undinebrod.com.

Segarra is a Boston-born artist and photographer, currently based out of Chicago. She received her master of fine arts degree at Lesley University College of Art and Design, where she experimented in alternative photographic processes and mixed media, studying closely under Christopher James.

Under the structure of the program, Segarra was able to work with a number of guest advisers, including artists Dan Estabrook and Luis Gonzalez Palma, as well as art critics Vicki Goldberg and Lyle Rexer.

She specializes in large format photography and alternative photographic processes, such as salt, kallitype and platinum print processes. Segarra has exhibited nationally in many venues, including Panopticon Gallery, the Adrienne Arsht Center for Art Basel Miami, First Street Gallery, and the Kiernan Gallery.

More information about the artist is available on her website, www.nikkisegarra.com.

Women in the Arts has been a Woodlands Academy tradition since 2005, when parents of two alumnae offered to sponsor exhibits by two visiting artists. In addition to the exhibits, each visiting artist made a presentation to students taking studio art and photography.

Because this initial event was so well received by the visiting artists and Woodlands students alike, the donors offered to make Women in the Arts an annual event.
