Large turnout for memorial karate tournament

The 29th annual Jennifer Malloy Memorial Karate Tournament was held Sunday, Feb. 21, at Harper College, Palatine. More than 860 competitors, and 1,500 spectators participated in the tournament, sponsored by Palatine-based Illinois Shotokan Karate Clubs.

Malloy, a former Illinois Shotokan Karate Club student, fought a valiant battle against cancer before she died in May1987.

Students from the 75 ISKC programs at park districts throughout the Chicago area competed, with proceeds benefiting the Jennifer Malloy Scholarship fund and the Families in Need Fund, which assists students whose families are experiencing financial hardship in taking karate classes at ISKC.
