Batavia close to picking 3rd sculpture for Wilson Street bridge

Batavia officials have resumed the effort to place a third sculpture on the Wilson Street bridge over the Fox River.

Tuesday night aldermen will review proposals from several artists, on the theme of "science."

The proposals can be found in the committee-of-the-whole packet on the city's website.

The designs were sought in 2013 and posted at the Batavia Government Center for many months for public comment.

The winning sculptor will be paid $30,000 for the work. The money will come from property taxes on downtown properties, set aside for projects intended to improve the value of the downtown.

When the Wiliam J. Donovan Bridge was replaced in 2007 and 2008, it was designed with four pedestals for statues, representing nature, history, science and art. The first, "Nature: Sounds of Harmony," was installed in 2008. The history-related statue, "A Look Back," was put up in 2013. Two painted ceramic bulldogs, purchased from a Batavia-themed fundraising campaign for nonprofit organizations, occupy the other two spots.

The committee meets at 7:30 p.m. at 100 N. Island Ave.
