Dundee-Crown's Barker nets Daily Herald MVP distinction

Dundee-Crown senior guard Melissa Barker has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for her recent high school girls basketball performances.

Melissa Barker, Dundee-Crown: The Chargers' senior guard had a monster week in leading her team to its second straight Class 4A regional championship. In a 70-29 win over Elgin, she scored 13 points with three 3-pointers and in a 46-43 semifinal victory over Grant she had 12 points, all on 3-pointers. But she saved her best for the title game, leading D-C to a 54-51 upset of top-seeded South Elgin by scoring 25 points with six more 3-pointers.

Maggie Bair, Glenbard South: The 6-foot-1 freshman helped the Raiders to two lopsided regional victories. Against Noble Golder of Chicago she had 18 points, 8 rebounds and a blocked shot. Bair, the county's rebounding leader, came back with 15 points and 21 rebounds to secure the regional championship against Noble Bulls. She made 16 of 30 shots for the week.

Maggie Leazer, St. Viator: Leazer scored a game-high 16 points which included a 12-for-15 performance at the foul line to help the fifth-seeded Lions upset No. 1 seed Antioch in Class 3A sectional semifinal play at the Cahill Gymnasium. The victory marked St. Viator's first in sectional play.

Amy Reiser, Antioch: Even after returning to the lineup after missing a month due to a back injury, the junior guard never quite played at full strength, and yet she still made an impact. She scored 16 points in the Sequoits' 57-45 win over Marian Central in the Woodstock North regional final. She then had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals in a 58-45 sectional-semifinal loss to host St. Viator.
