Dundee-Crown trips up Crystal Lake Central again

With very few wins during the 2015-2016 season, Dundee-Crown boys basketball coach Lance Huber has been looking for progress and improvement in his team.

The 13th-year head coach is starting to like what he sees.

The Chargers utilized a balanced offensive attack in knocking off Crystal Lake Central 51-42 in a Fox Valley Conference crossover game in Crystal Lake Tuesday night.

The Chargers (3-22), who have defeated Central twice in the last week, received a combined 30 points from seniors Nick Shydlowski (9), Dan Dickson (8), Holden Carlson (6), Matt Weichmann (5) and Russ Bergeron (2).

'The seniors are really starting to come together and they are contributing," said Huber. "They have really stayed with it through a lot of losses and frustration. They have continued to give us great effort in games and in practice."

Central's Adam Pump, who scored 15 points in the first half including four 3-pointers, was held by Shydlowski to 5 points in the second half. The Tiger junior guard scored a game-high 20 points with 5 treys.

"The point of emphasis in the second half was to contest his 3-point shot," said Shydlowski. "Coach said I was playing too far off him in the first half. I wanted to bother his shot in the second half. We held him down in the second half. The coaches have kept us positive throughout a tough season."

Jack Orndahl, with two 3-pointers, added 8 points for the Chargers.

D-C seized control of the game toward the end of the first half.

With the scored tied at 19, the Chargers tallied the final 7 points to take a 26-19 lead into the halftime locker room.

Sean Jay, who was fouled on a 3-point attempt made all 3 free throws and Carlson and Weichmann each converted baskets as the Chargers held a 7-point advantage at intermission.

The Chargers' biggest lead was 33-23 after a layup by Orndahl with 3:06 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers (2-25) didn't quit and climbed within a point of the Chargers 40-39 on a trey by Kyle Vesely with 4:46 left in the contest.

Central couldn't get any closer.

Four free throws in the last minute by Shydlowski sealed the win for the Chargers.

Freshman center Alex Timmerman backed Pump for the Tigers with 8 points and 9 rebounds.
