Army National Guard salutes Libertyville boys soccer

Libertyville's boys soccer team was presented with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy during a recognition assembly Friday.

The honor is part of the 11th annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its fifth year recognizing soccer. Libertyville is one of just 10 boys soccer programs being honored.

The Wildcats finished ranked No. 11 in the country by MaxPreps, which ranks more than 10,000 high school boys soccer teams in the nation.

Libertyville won its first boys soccer state championship in school history last fall, beating Quincy Senior 2-1 in the Class 3A final.

"It's as good an honor we've ever received for the team and the school," Wildcats coach Andy Bitta said. "It's the most mature team I've had. They were very coachable, very intelligent and smart. They would listen to me at halftime as to the adjustments we needed to make and then they would go out and make them."
