Bands from Nashville and Austin come to ECC Arts Center March 5

Nashville, Tenn.-based band Rivers and Rust and Austin, Texas-based band Greyhounds will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Elgin Community College Arts Center. This Nashville/Austin music showcase will be held in the ECC Arts Center's Blizzard Theatre, Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Rivers and Rust's Sheila Marshall and Kyle Cook honed their raw mix of soul, rock, and Americana in Nashville. Cook rose to fame as the guitarist for the multi-platinum Matchbox Twenty, and has gone on to make a name for himself as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Marshall is a bluesy Texas songstress with years of songwriting and touring under her belt.

Marshall and Cook first met nearly eight years ago, when a mutual friend passed some of her songs along to the rocker. "He liked my music, so we ended up meeting in Nashville and we just hit it off," she recalls. In late 2014, the pair decided to mix their voices and styles to become Rivers and Rust. Their debut EP was released in 2015, and they're currently working on Rivers and Rust's first full-length album.

Austin-based, Memphis Soul-inspired Greyhounds features guitarist Andrew Trube and keyboardist Anthony Farrell. The duo have been making music and touring for 15 years, refining and developing a sound Trube calls "Hall and Oates meet ZZ Top." Those years of work paid off when Ardent Music, the independent record label based out of Memphis' legendary Ardent Studios, committed to producing three Greyhounds albums, the first of which was released in spring of 2014.

When they aren't touring and recording as Greyhounds, Trube and Farrell keep busy as members of JJ Grey and Mofro, playing 200 dates a year, and writing songs for a variety of other musicians, including Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. CMT Edge calls Greyhounds "The past, present, and future of soul."

Tickets to the Rivers and Rust/Greyhounds performance are $28. A three-course, pre-show dinner prepared by ECC's award-winning Culinary Arts and Hospitality program can be purchased for an additional $29. Dinners must be ordered on or before Monday, Feb. 29. The menu includes spicy ranch and shrimp cocktail, BBQ pork chop accompanied by a twice baked potato and a fresh vegetable, and blueberry peach crisp for dessert. Wine and beer are sold separately by the glass.
