Panarin's first hat trick leads Hawks over Rangers 5-3

Hats off to Artemi Panarin.

The Chicago Blackhawks' winger put a big-time feather in his remarkable rookie season by recording his first NHL hat trick during a 5-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Andrew Desjardins and Panarin gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead midway through the second period, but the Rangers scored 3 straight goals to take a 3-2 lead early in the third.

After Andrew Shaw tied things up at 9:53 of the third, Panarin put on his cape and scored the game's final 2 goals - the first on the power play with three minutes left and the second with 1:11 remaining into an empty net.

Patrick Kane assisted on the game-winner, threading a pass from behind the net, through Artem Anisimov's legs and right to Panarin, who easily beat Henrik Lundqvist.

Panarin, who scored on all 3 shots he took, has 22 goals and became the 15th rookie in franchise history to reach the 20-goal mark, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"Bread Man, he's been great for us this year," Jonathan Toews told reporters afterward. "He wants to score and when he finally gets a few here and there, he plays with so much more confidence and energy … saw that again tonight.

"Not a lot of games we go through without some pretty big contributions from that line."

Kane has 83 points on the season, while Panarin has 57. Panarin could tie the team rookie record of 90 points held by Steve Larmer if he could somehow record 33 more in the final 21 games. He's also 16 assists away from Kane's rookie record of 51.

"He's been fun to watch; he's enjoying himself here," coach Joel Quenneville said. "And (with) Kaner, they make each other better as well. We've seen over the course of the year some real highlight plays. And Arty quietly goes about his business. He doesn't get any attention, but he does his thing as well."

The Hawks went 3-for-4 on the power play, meaning they are 7-for-11 with the man advantage in the last two contests after going 3-for-31 over an 11-game stretch.

"It's good to see that clicking," Kane told NBCSN.

Said Rangers coach Alain Vigneault: "I think that three of those calls were … borderline, but that's part of the game. You've got to find a way to get the job done, killing the penalty. We didn't do that."

Teuvo Teravainen had 2 assists, setting up Desjardins and Shaw with perfect passes right in front of the net. Corey Crawford made 31 saves for the Hawks, while Lundqvist had a personal five-game winning streak snapped.

Late in the second period, it appeared a four-minute double-minor penalty to Vincent Hinostroza would prove costly for the Hawks as Derick Brassard and Dan Boyle scored less than two minutes apart to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead at 2:17 of the third period.

Some pretty passing from Toews to Teravainen to Shaw, though, resulted in Shaw's 11th goal of the season at 9:53 of the third to tie the game at 3-3.

The Rangers had not lost in regulation at home since Dec. 20.

The Hawks next play Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis against the Wild.
