LZMW savors senior-night triumph

Senior night was a big success for the Lake Zurich-Mundelein-Wauconda varsity hockey team.

In a North Central Conference playoff game, LZMW defeated Nazareth 4-1 in front of a big crowd at the Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills.

Seniors Jack Kekstadt, Avery Schaub, Jake Breitenreiter, Josselin Juras, Mikey Nieckula, Nick Hollander, Marybeth Stone and Sebastian Medina were honored before the puck drop.

After a scoreless first period, Nazareth got on the board at 14:17 of the second period with a goal from Michael Cross.

LZMW tied the score with 12:05 left in the period on a rebound goal from Alex Pighini.

LZMW struck three more times in the third period with goals from Kolby Lapple, Mikey Nieckula and Remi Mueller.

"After playing 2 periods to a 1-1 tie we were able to come out in the third period and score within the first ten seconds and start to shift the game our way," said LZMW coach Steve Sarauer. "We then scored again on the next shift to make it 3-1. We played our game in the third - physical, consistent, and team hockey."

LZMW fought off a 5-on-3 penalty kill to run out the clock.

"Nazareth's fantastic goaltender, Nick Fliger, kept them in the game and also gave their team the confidence they needed to play us to a competitive back and forth game," Sarauer added.

LZMW faces the Niles Nighthawks on Wednesday at 9 p.m. at the Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills.

"We need to continue that third period trend," Sarauer added. "And apply it to all three periods if we plan to be in the hunt for the Platinum Varsity Championship at the end of February."
