Badstuber set to miss rest of season with ankle injury

MUNICH (AP) - Bayern Munich and Germany defender Holger Badstuber is all but certain to miss the rest of the season with a fractured ankle.

The 26-year-old central defender was injured in training Saturday, Bayern said.

The club said he had already undergone an operation and will be out for three months, jeopardizing his chances of playing in the European Championship. The month-long Euro 2016 starts June 10 in France.

Badstuber has not been lucky in the past, including an absence of nearly two years with knee injuries, starting in December 2012 when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament playing against Borussia Dortmund.

He returned at the start of last season only to tear a tendon in his thigh. He then missed the end of last season with a left hamstring injury and returned in November after 200 days out. He had only begun playing full league games again recently.

Bayern was already missing central defenders Jerome Boateng and Javier Martinez through injury. The club signed Serdar Tasci in the winter transfer window as cover for the mounting injuries.
