Jacobs WYSE Team takes first at regional competition

The Jacobs High School WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) Team placed first out of five teams at the regional competition at Elgin Community College Feb. 5.

This is the 10th year that Jacobs has had a first-place finish. Eleven of the 14 students on the team received medals. The team advances to the sectional competition on March 3 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Danny Madoch took first place in computer science. Madilyn Moeller won first place in English and third place in biology. Jacob Moser took first place in physics, and second place in math. Sam Smith won first place in chemistry and second place in English. Parth Shah took first place in biology.

Kevin Derby won second-place prizes in biology and chemistry. Ryan McMahon took second place in chemistry. Shane O'Brien won second place in computer science.

Winning third place prizes were Hamzah Malik in biology and chemistry; Kevin McMahon in physics; and Nicole Oyewunm in chemistry and English.

Also competing are Steven Gruver, Katie Swanson and Brandon Wirkus.
