Lawyer may use insanity defense for mom accused in slaying

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - An attorney for a Rockford woman accused of stabbing her 8-year-old son to death says he might pursue an insanity defense on her behalf.

Winnebago County public defender David Doll filed an "affirmative defense of insanity" motion Wednesday and said afterward an insanity defense is an option he's considering.

Jody L. Kossow has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the September 2013 slaying. She's accused of stabbing her son, Thomas, with a kitchen knife.

The Rockford Register Star reports (http://bit.ly/1mvjfAA ) her attorney has argued in past filings that statements Kossow made to police and her behavior after the incident were evidence of a "disturbed mental condition."
