Keeping it 'Green' with The Growing Place March 19

The Growing Place Garden Center will host some "green" guests for a seminar packed full of helpful tips to make your yard an oasis for you and the natural world on Saturday, March 19.

The day includes talks to inspire and engage gardeners for success in the garden using native plants and sustainable practices. The seminar will help homeowners create a beautiful landscape that incorporate native and nonnative plants.

"We are excited to have Mavis Bates and Trish Beckjord with us to share their knowledge on sustainable practices," said Carol Massat, co-owner of The Growing Place.

Bates is the first person that Waubonsee Community College tapped to teach their new course "Sustainability 101" because of her integral role in developing the Aurora Greenfest. Beckjord, native plant specialist at Midwest Groundcovers, is an expert in sustainable planting and site design, particularly the integration of native species into landscapes.

"Both Bates and Beckjord will share insights that you can put to good use at your home," says Massat.

In addition, The Conservation Foundation will share information on all the excellent resources they can offer homeowners, including their conservation@home program and attendees can order rain barrels to be shipped directly to their homes.

The $30 registration fee includes all three programs and noon lunch. The Sustainability Seminar will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Bringing Green Home with Mavis Bates from Waubonsee Community College at 10 a.m. As the instructor for the Sustainability 101, Mavis has a wealth of information on all sorts of ways to make your home and garden green.
