Aurora to pay $2.65 million to wrongly imprisoned man

AURORA, Ill. (AP) - The city of Aurora has agreed to pay $2.65 million to a man wrongly imprisoned for a murder for more than 10 years.

Jonathan Grayson, once known as Jonathan Moore of Aurora, was charged and convicted of the 2000 shooting murder of Shawn Miller of Montgomery. A second man, Leroy Starks, also was wounded in the incident and paralyzed.

A Kane County judge in 2012 vacated the conviction at the request of the state's attorney's office.

Aurora police say they received information in 2011 from an informant that someone else committed the crimes. Police found new witnesses who hadn't testified at trial and brought new information to prosecutors.

The (Aurora) Beacon-News (http://trib.in/1o4PjwF) reports Aurora aldermen unanimously approved the settlement with Grayson this week with no comment or discussion. Also as part of the agreement, the city will pay Grayson's attorneys $350,000.
