CSKA Moscow signs Russia captain Roman Shirokov

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia captain Roman Shirokov joined CSKA Moscow on a free transfer on Wednesday until the end of the season.

With the European Championship coming up, Shirokov was without a club after leaving Spartak Moscow last month by mutual consent following a reported breakdown in relations with management.

Joining Russian Premier League leader CSKA is a return home for the 34-year-old Shirokov, who started at CSKA's academy but left in 2001 to seek first-team football elsewhere.

Shirokov's move also means he will play his club football under Russia coach Leonid Slutsky, who is combining his duties with CSKA and the national team.

Shirokov has 13 goals in 52 caps for Russia, and scored the winner over Portugal in November in a friendly.
