Western Sydney fined, points suspended over fan misbehavior

SYDNEY (AP) - Football Federation Australia has fined Western Sydney Wanderers 50,000 Australian dollars ($35,600) and imposed a suspended competition point deduction following the misbehavior of fans who lit flares during last weekend's A-League match at Melbourne Victory.

FFA chief executive David Gallop on Thursday said the Wanderers were guilty of bringing the game into disrepute via the "coordinated misconduct" of a section of fans at the Melbourne match.

Gallop says "the coordinated and calculated way the fans behaved was a serious blight on the reputation of football."

Western Sydney drew 1-1 with the Victory in the ill-tempered match featuring nine yellow cards. The Wanderers are level on points with Brisbane but ahead on goal difference going into this weekend's 19th round. A recurrence of crowd trouble in the next 12 months could cost the Wanderers three competition points.
