Weyhrich's thievery helps Hersey steal a win against Schaumburg

Kelly Weyhrich says her favorite part of basketball is teamwork.

"I like when we are working as a team to score offensive points," said Hersey's 5-foot-2 junior point guard. "I like when everyone is contributing."

Weyhrich contributed in record style on Monday night when the Huskies rolled past host Schaumburg 68-39 in the second-place Mid-Suburban League girls basketball crossover contest.

Weyhrich swiped the ball 10 times to tie Juliette Vainisi (2014) and Shana Lieberman's (2004) for the school record for a single game.

The energetic floor general also scored 16 points with 5 rebounds and 5 assists as the Huskies improved to 23-4.

Weyhrich's thievery began early as two of her steals led to a layup by Claire Gritt and a 3-pointer by Gina Miklasz, which staked the Huskies to a 7-0 lead.

Weyhrich's 3-pointer gave Hersey a 14-3 lead less than three minutes into the game.

"The best thing wasn't how well Kelly played on offense and defense," said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. "It was seeing how excited her teammates are for her when she has success. Even the kids on the bench are so excited and appreciative of everything she does for the team.

"Susan (Lindstrom, a reserve) didn't even want to go in for her (in the fourth quarter) because she wanted to see Kelly try and break the record. She was willing to give up playing time for Kelly to get more recognition."

Schaumburg's six seniors, including manager Tyler Brossard, were recognized prior to the game.

Saxons coach Curtis Goodwin started all seniors - Becca Kasner, Jessica Cleator, Serena Carson, Lexi Ross and Paige Alt.

"It was a nice senior night," said Goodwin, whose team will take a 16-10 record into its last regular-season game at St. Charles East on Friday. "We just have to play harder and work at the little things. This was a good game. We'll move on from here."

Junior Mallory Gerber led Schaumburg with 10 points, followed by classmates Lauren O'Connell (9) and Gina D'Orazio (8).

Gritt led all scorers with 20 points while junior Gina Miklasz and senior Maggie Berigan (8 rebounds) each added 10. Sophomore Erin McGrath came off the bench to grab 7 rebounds (six offensive).

But the biggest stat of the game was turned in by the smallest player.

"I had no clue," Weyhrich said about tying Vainisi and Lieberman. "When a player turns her back, I try to go after the ball when they're not expecting it."
