Romeoville woman talks about contracting Zika virus

A Romeoville woman is among three Illinois residents who have contracted the Zika virus, WGN reported Tuesday.

Samantha Mejia, 30, went on a trip to visit family in Honduras over the holidays. She told the TV station she and her family took precautions and used bug spray while they were traveling.

Once the family got back to the suburbs, Mejia started hearing more talk of the Zika virus. Mejia, who was pregnant during her trip to Honduras, also noticed flu-like symptoms a week after getting back from Honduras and then developed a rash, she told WGN.

Her blood work was sent to the Centers for Disease Control, which confirmed Mejia had Zika.

A few weeks later, Mejia went in for her first ultrasound and found out she had had a miscarriage, she told WGN.

Doctors have told Mejia she might now be immune to the Zika virus, and she told WGN she is feeling better now.

Another pregnant Illinois woman contracted the virus after traveling to Haiti, and an Illinois man contracted the virus after traveling to Colombia, according to the state health department.
