Winners move on to district free-throw contest

Several boys and girls from the Huntley area, ages 9-14, were named local champions of the 2016 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and earned the right to compete at the district level.

St. Mary of Huntley Council 11666 sponsored the competition Jan. 9 at Centegra HealthBridge in Huntley.

There were 54 local youngsters, ages 9-14, participating in this annual event.

In the girls' brackets, the champions for the local competition were: Abigail Lentz for the 9-year-olds, Morgan McCaughn for the 10-year-olds, Allie Ambrogio for the 11-year-olds, Ellen Winters for the 12-year-olds, and Francesca Romano for the 13-year-olds. There were no competitors in the 14-year-old bracket.

For the boys' brackets, the champions for the local competition were: Jake Terlecki for the 9-year-olds, Andrew Ressler for the 10-year-olds, Adam Guazzo for the 11-year-olds, Tyler DeBlieck for the 12-year-olds, Zachary Fitzgerald for the 13-year-olds, and Ryan Vrugt for the 14-year-old boys' bracket.

Each of these winners will compete in the district competition to be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, at St. Margaret Mary School, 111 S. Hubbard St. in Algonquin, with an eye toward moving on to the regional, state and international levels.

The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with nearly 1.8 million members in over 14,000 local councils. Last year, Knights donated 70 million volunteer hours and $167 million in charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefit their church, councils, communities, families and youth.
