Police identify man in fatal crash

A 33-year-old man who died early Sunday after a car crashed into a house in Aurora has been identified.

Obed Cruz-Hernandez, of Aurora, was pronounced dead at 2:43 a.m. at Rush Copley Medical Center. He was one of two people in a Volkswagen Jetta that was traveling south on Farnsworth Avenue about 2 a.m., according to a news release from Aurora police.

A preliminary investigation determined that the driver lost control of the car just south of Indian Avenue, went off the road and hit a residence on the 500 block of Farnsworth Avenue. Cruz-Hernandez was ejected from the car because of the force of the crash.

An autopsy conducted Monday by the Kane County Coroner's office determined he died from multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle crash.

The other occupant, Stephanie Figueroa, 27, of Streator, was taken into custody after a "brief foot pursuit" and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

She was treated for injuries at an Aurora-area hospital and released, police said.

Sgt. Mathew Thomas said the charges against Figueroa are relating to "the chain of events which preceded the crash, but the driver at the time of the crash is still unknown."

Additional charges may follow, he said.
