Wheeling takes regional title at Glenbrook South

Wheeling's wrestling team rose to the top in the Class 3A regional meet hosted by Glenbrook South on Saturday.

The Wildcats advanced to the team sectional round to be held in a little over two weeks by finishing with 208 points, ahead of runner-up Fremd (186) and third-place New Trier (175.5).

Wheeling had champions at 106 pounds (Manny Ramirez), 113 (Mason Skloot), 138 (Tristen Guaman), 145 (Andrew Lara), 152 (Jalen Shaw) and 160 (Carlos Montiel).

Also advancing to the individual sectional are the Wildcats' Brian Madrigal (third at 120), JP Smith (third at 126), Robert Torres (third at 182) and second-place finishers Yoni Medina (220) and Zach Yfantis (285).

Fremd had regional champs at 126 pounds (Cole Riemer), 195 (Aaron Cortez), 200 (Alex Jacobs) and 285 (Zach Nemec).

Hersey senior Mitch MacTavish won at 120 pounds, getting a tech fall over his New Trier opponent in the title bout.

Buffalo Grove had a pair of second-place finishers - Sam Haro at 195 pounds, and Jon Toriumi at 160.

Palatine advanced Oscar Rodriguez, who finished second at 113 pounds.

Class 3A at Glenbard West: Leyden's advancing wrestlers were Shane Dziadosz (third at 113), Wesam Alabed (second at 126), Fidel Hernandez (second at 132), Jeremiah Recinos (second at 145), Husam Alabed (third at 160), Jesse Hernandez (third at 182) and Ryan Ramirez (second at 220).

Oak Park rolled to the team title with 282.5 points, and Leyden was fourth at 110.

Class 2A at Antioch: St. Viator's James Valentino claimed the heavyweight title, and the Lions will also be represented at the sectional round by Joe McIntyre (second place at 182 pounds) and Elijah Black (second place at 152 pounds).
