Hanover Park to hire deputy village manager, engineer

Hanover Park trustees Thursday voted to start looking for a deputy village manager, a position the village has gone without since 2009, after initially tabling the vote in January.

Mayor Rodney Craig said trustees wanted to make sure they understood what the deputy village manager's role would look like before taking a vote on it.

Trustee Bill Cannon was not present for the vote.

The deputy village manager position was included in the 2016 budget, but Craig says the village waited to add the position to the salary plan while revenue from the state was up in the air.

But now that the state has come through with the dollars, the village will begin seeking applicants.

The deputy village manager will start out with a proposed yearly salary between $106,400 and $148,959, and will also serve as the village's spokesperson.

Craig says hiring a deputy village manager is long overdue.

“We used to have the position, but we abolished it in 2009 so we had money to rebuild the police department,” Craig said Thursday. “Now we have the position of assistant village manager and PIO rolled up into one.”

Craig says an assistant manager will give Village Manager Juliana Maller more time to mentor and coach newer village staff.

Once official job descriptions are drawn up, the village will post the job and begin seeking applicants.

Trustees also approved adding the position of village engineer to the salary plan. The village engineer's salary will range from $87,789 to $122,906.

Hiring an engineer will help bring more consistency to the village's projects, Craig said in January. Hanover Park has previously been contracting out their engineering work.
