Geneva church volunteers package over 40 tons of food for local families

Volunteers from the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva aided the Northern Illinois Food Bank by processing over 40 tons of food and hygiene necessities in 2015.

Church member Kevin Beyer started the church's Food Bank Team in December 2014. Over the course of 2015, the group grew to 128 volunteers, comprised of church members and friends. The team collectively put in 846 hours of service during the year, packaging 79,679 pounds of food and 1,250 pounds of personal care items for distribution in nearby communities.

"I cannot begin to describe how overwhelmed I am by our church's generosity," Beyer said. "Through our ongoing participation we can continue helping the Northern Illinois Food Bank as they provide food and other essentials to those in need in our community."

The team continues to volunteer at the Northern Illinois Food Bank one Saturday each month from 9 a.m. to noon. Participation is open to church members, friends and visitors. For information on how to participate, email foodbankleader@uusg.org.
