Fox Lake man accused of child porn, drug charges

Two Fox Lake residents face multiple felony charges after police found child pornography and drugs in their home, Lake County authorities said.

Joshua S. Hoffman, 24, is charged with reproducing child pornography, possession of child pornography, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and felony drug charges for possession of cannabis, LSD, Psilocybin mushrooms and MDMA, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Mariah M. Carlos, 19, faces charges of unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of more than 1,000 grams of cannabis, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, sheriff's police said.

They were arrested Wednesday after an investigation by the cybercrime units from the Lake County Sheriff's Office and the Lake County State's Attorney's Office led to a search warrant for their residence on the 100 block of Riverview Avenue, Lake County Sheriff's Det. Christopher Covelli said.

During the search, detectives discovered a loaded firearm, a significant amount of drugs, and multiple devices capable of storing digital media, authorities said. A forensic examination of the devices revealed hundreds of videos identified as child pornography, Covelli said. Hoffman reproduced at least one video containing child pornography, where the children depicted were under the age of 13, he added.

Hoffman is held in Lake County jail on $400,000 bail. Carlos is held in jail on $10,000 bail. Both are due in court Feb. 8.
