Lake County sheriff warns of burglaries at salons

Lake County sheriff's officials say there's been a recent increase in burglaries targeting salons.

Det. Christopher Covelli said officials have seen at least four salon break-ins in the last two months during evening and overnight hours. Authorities are investigating two burglaries in Long Grove and two in unincorporated Grayslake, Covelli said.

The burglaries are similar in that offenders primarily gain access by using force open a window or door and cash is taken. The break-ins take place when the businesses are closed, he added.

Undersheriff Raymond Rose said businesses owners should ensure they are using a burglar alarm and video surveillance systems to assist law enforcement. The public should report any suspicious activity by dialing 9-1-1, he said.

Covelli said business owners should also ensure businesses have ample lighting, use a secure safe to store cash and valuables when it's necessary to leave items overnight, reinforce door frames and windows, and make sure to use door locks with deadbolts.

“To reduce the risk of loss, remove cash and expensive valuables from your business every night,” Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said.

County sheriff's detectives are working with other area police detectives to investigate the burglaries.

Anyone with information is asked contact the Lake County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division at (847) 377-4250, or Lake County Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222.

Covelli said the sheriff's office provides security surveys to businesses within patrol areas. These surveys help business owners identify areas where security can be enhanced. Contact the office's Community Services Unit at (847) 377-4211 for information.
