Naperville cops use Narcan to save man from heroin overdose

Naperville police have used Narcan for the third time to save someone from a heroin overdose.

Police said they were called to a hotel on the 1500 block of Naperville/Wheaton Road at 2 a.m. Tuesday to help an unresponsive 26-year-old Naperville man who showed signs of an overdose.

Commander Jason Arres said responding officers administered a dose of Narcan and the man regained consciousness almost immediately. Naperville Fire Department paramedics took the man to Edward Hospital for additional treatment.

Arres said the man was at the hotel with friends who called for help. No arrests were made.

The DuPage County Narcan Program facilitates training in the use of the nonaddictive drug that can reverse a potentially fatal opioid overdose, and also supplies the product for first responders.

The drug was credited last week with saving 100 lives since officers countywide began administering it in 2014.

"Narcan has proven to be a valuable tool in our effort to preserve life in overdose cases," police Chief Robert Marshall said in a written statement. "The availability of this resource, however, has in no way diminished our efforts to combat the root of the problem, which is drug use and abuse. We will continue to partner with the community, utilizing the many programs available to educate and offer assistance to those who need it, with the goal of curbing drug abuse in our city."
