Hasanov makes last meet at Barrington most memorable

Barrington's Abby Hasanov has definitely left her mark for the Fillies girls gymnastics team over the past four years.

And she didn't disappoint Tuesday in her home finale at the Barrington regional.

Hasanov swept the top in spot in all four events, capturing the all-around title with an impressive 38.125 and leading Barrington to the title with 145.175 points.

Buffalo Grove took second with 132.175 points, followed by Rolling Meadows (129.60) and Fenton (105.90).

Barrington produced its third-best mark of the season and joins Fremd as an automatic qualifier to the Schaumburg sectional, which will be held at 6 p.m. Monday.

Hasanov bounced back from a pair of falls at the Mid-Suburban League meet to give the home crowd one final show, and it was impressive.

"She doesn't do too well with falls," said Barrington coach Jason Loeffler. "You're not going to see too many girls like her enter anybody's gym - you're lucky to get a kid like her."

Hasanov started her night by taking first on the vault (9.625). She then won bars (9.4), stuck her jump series to nail a down a first on beam (9.6) and ended her night with a sizzling first-place floor exercise routine (9.5)

"I wanted to take it all in," said Hasanov, who holds the top mark on Barrington's all-time leader board for the vault, floor, and all-around. "It was my last home meet and more than anything I just wanted to have fun."

The Fillies followed her lead. Molly Blanke placed third in the all-around (36.10) and junior Rachel Timperman was fourth (35.075).

Blanke added a second-place finish on beam (9.25) and fifth-place finishes on bars (8.875) and floor (8.875). Timperman contributed fourth-place finishes on bars (8.925) and floor (9.05).

Junior Hayley Nilles came up with key third-place finishes on bars (9.125) and beam (9.2). Senior Claire Marousek joined the effort with a fourth-place finish on vault (8.95), and senior Morgan Eisenhauer was also part of the Fillies' winning effort.

"We are all starting to really clean it up and see what our final goal is," said Blanke. "And we're working really hard to get there."

Rolling Meadows senior Kelly Johnston suffered a concussion and bruise on the back of her neck in early January. She sat out ten days before competing in the MSL meet, and the rust showed a bit.

But the defending beam state champion took a huge step forward on Tuesday, taking second in the all-around (36.90) and adding second-place finishes on vault (9.275), bars (9.325), and floor (9.275). She recorded a fall on beam (9.025) but recovered to earn a fourth-place finish.

"I'm feeling pretty confident with tonight's meet," said Johnston. "There are still a couple of things I can definitely fix, but I say I'm 90 percent back - and I'm ready to be 100 percent."

Buffalo Grove senior Diandra Duenser started a bit slow on vault and bars, but the Bison senior ended the night with a flourish.

Duenser took third on the floor (9.175) and then came back to add a fifth-place finish on beam (8.65) in finishing fifth in the all-around (34.8).

"Floor definitely put me in the right place," said Duenser of her big finish. "I just put my head into the floor routine and did exactly how I did at practice."

Junior Teresa Riles added a fifth-place finish for the Bison on vault (8.925).
