Bartlett Library kicks off Illinois book award voting

Children can stop by the Bartlett Public Library District to vote for their favorite nominees for the Monarch Award, Bluestem Award and Rebecca Caudill Award.

These awards are put in place to recognize outstanding works of literature pertaining to different age groups.

In order to prepare children for this voting month, the Bartlett Library has had the Monarch Club, for grades K-3, as well as the Bluestem Book Club, grades 3-5. Each month, the children in each of the programs were exposed to different nominated books.

Assistant Manager of Youth & Teen Services Phyllis Sadowski believes that children can learn a lot from voting.

"Being able to vote for all of the awards helps children make an informed decision, which in turn helps make informed voters," Sadowski said. "We are right in the middle of a presidential election, so this can be a fun way for kids to have a voice and learn how to be in a voting process as well."

In order for children to vote for books, they must meet certain criteria.

Children must have heard of or read at least five nominated books in order to vote for the Monarch Award, and read or heard of at least four nominated books in order to vote for the Bluestem Award.

In order to vote for the Rebecca Caudill nominees, a child must have read or heard of at least three books on the list.

Voting for the Monarch Award is open to children in grades K-3, the Bluestem Award is open to voting from children in grades 3-5 and children in grades 4-8 are able to vote for the Rebecca Caudill Award.

Complete lists of nominated books can be found in the Bartlett Library in the Youth & Teen Services Department. Voting goes through Thursday, Feb. 25. Once a child has voted, then they are not able to vote at another location or time.
