East Leyden High School to present Strategies for High Performance and Progressive Practices at Ignite '16 School Showcase

East Leyden is one of 18 high-performing middle and high school level schools selected to participate in the Ignite '16 School Showcase, a component of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Annual Conference February 25-27, 2016 in Orlando, FL. NASSP and the Center for Secondary School Redesign (CSSR) host this annual national showcase that includes school leaders, teachers, and students from the nation's top middle schools and high schools. The objective is to discuss effective practices, programs and strategies with colleagues from across the country.

East Leyden serves a diverse student body of over 1,700 students. The school has been selected for the NASSP School Showcase for its sustained culture of innovation and dedication in creating a learning environment that focuses on meeting the needs of the students. Principal Jason Markey, Assistant Principal Anita Huffman and Special Education teacher Meghan O'Neil will represent East Leyden at the showcase.

"Our selection as a school worthy of being showcased by the NASSP is a credit to our amazing students, teachers, and entire community who continually strive to build a better school," said Markey.

"The Ignite '16 School Showcase uniquely connects principals, teacher leaders, and students with exemplary colleagues across the nation to discuss effective practices," said NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti. "That connectedness is essential to school leadership in the 21st century, and we know the Showcase will expand the professional learning communities of many of the educators in attendance."

Schools are chosen to participate on the basis of their outstanding reputations for quality and innovative practices that meet the needs of their student populations. At the Showcase, school representatives share experiences related implementing successful practices, many of which are aligned with NASSP's Breaking Ranks framework, a program that provides school leaders with tools and strategies that address leadership challenges at all grade levels.

"The schools presenting at this year's Showcase are truly inspirational," said CSSR President Joe DiMartino. "As they share their stories of implementing the Breaking Ranks framework, participants will become energized about the possibilities. They will bring back with them accounts of success that will provide a vision for transformation of their own schools."
