Deerfield edges Mundelein; Balcerak sets pool records at Conant

Deerfield edged Mundelein for top honors in the flighted boys swimming and diving meet hosted by Conant, the Cougar Classic, on Saturday.

The Warriors scored 359 points to 356 for the Mustangs.

St. Viator earned a third-place finish at 213, just ahead of Rolling Meadows (206), Conant (204) and the District 300 co-op team (188).

Duncan Black helped lead the way for Mundelein, winning the 50-yard free in 22.34. Will Garcia won the 500 free (4:59.12) and both had legs on the winning 200 free relay (1:30.81).

Deerfield had the top medley and 400 free relays and had an individual champ in Judd Fishman in the 200 IM (2:06.25).

St. Viator was led by record-setting performances from sophomore Michael Balcerak.

He won the 200 freestyle in 1:44.63, then set a pool record by winning the 100 free in 46.83.

Balcerak's leadoff leg of the Lions' 200 freestyle relay, 21.80, also set a record for Conant's pool in the 50 free.

St. Viator coach Jamie Klotz characterized it as a bounce-back meet for his team after a dissatisfying showing the previous weekend.

Among the other noteworthy swims for the Lions were a 50.81 anchor leg by Dante Cerone on the 400 free relay, a 22.96 from Ben Peinsipp in the 50 free and a 2:10.12 from Michael Ruben in the 200 IM, good for third place.

"Just a really nice showing from us, all the way around," Klotz said.

Rolling Meadows' top finishes came from sophomore Josh Dellorto. He placed second in the 200 free (1:48.35) and third in the 100 back (56.06).

Mustangs soph Jake Pors came up with a win in the 'B' heat of the 200 free (1:52.82), and Nate Pardini was tops in the 'C' heat of the 500 free (5:16.67). Andrew Tavares contributed with a victory in the 'B' heat of the 100 fly (59.50), and junior Filip Pancerz won the 'B' heat of the 100 back (56.75) and took third in the 'A' heat of the 100 fly (57.11)

Conant's Justin Lim won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.60, and Tim Song placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.66).

Cougars junior diver Cole Aykroid added to his memorable season by winning with an 11-dive score of 454.35. Downers Grove's North's Kevin Sullivan was second at 437.20.

For Dist. 300, Francis Ogaban was second in the 'B' heat of the 100 back (57.06) and Harold Ogaban placed second in the 'A' heat of the 200 IM (2:06.69).
