Solimene, seniors carry the day for St. Viator

St. Viator's girls basketball team pulled out a hard-fought 41-39 victory over St. Edward on senior day Saturday in Arlington Heights.

Appropriately enough, the Lions' only two seniors - Maggie Leazer and Julia Bergstorm - were essential to the win as each scored 8 points behind sophomore guard Olivia Solimene's team-high 15 points (three 3-pointers) along with 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 1 assist.

With the entire program on hand for senior day, St. Viator trailed 25-21 at half but rallied for the nonconference win that raised their record to 13-10.

Bergstrom also had 2 steals and a rebound while Leazer had 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

Sophomore guard Myia Clark led the Lions with 6 rebounds to go along with her 7 points. Junior center Jenna Breslin pulled down 5 rebounds with 1 blocked shot and 1 rebound. Sophomore guards Maeve Schumacher and Michaela Mueller each had 2 rebounds.

Katie Castoro had 16 points and Maddie Spagnola 10 for the Green Wave (13-10).

Lake Zurich 36, Wheeling 29: McKenna Zobel (19 points) and Abby Pirron (8) were top scorers in the nonconference game for the visiting Bears (14-9), who won for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

Wheeling (11-14) was led by Melissa Claver (7 points) and Kourtney Schuetz (6).

Bartlett 56, Conant 36: Sophomore Ania Baker led Conant with 10 points in the nonconference game.

Jorie Wachal (9 points), Cate Fitzgerald (7), Brit Laskero (4), Michelle Benson (3) and Karli Heneghan (3) each hit 3-pointers for the visiting Cougars (9-14) in the nonconference game.

Kayla Hare scored 16 points to lead the Hawks (17-7).

It was Bartlett's eighth straight win and ninth in its last 10 games.

Plainfield East 56, Palatine 47: Palatine (9-15) was led by Elena Porrata (15 points), who connected for three 3-pointers in the nonconference contest in Plainfield.

Reggie Much (one 3-pointer), Sarah Udoni, Carrissa Multon (two 3-pointers) and Corey Rinella each chipped in 6 for the Pirates.
