Elgin police: Juvenile charged with attempted vehicular hijacking

A 14-year-old has been arrested on a hijacking charge after a woman reported being threatened with a gun while in her vehicle Thursday night, Elgin police said.

Police said in a news release that the victim told officers that she was seated in her vehicle in a parking lot on the 700 block of West Chicago Street when she was approached around 7:30 p.m. Thursday by a male who was covering his face. The male knocked on the window of the vehicle with a handgun. The victim said she then drove away from the area, and the subject fled on foot.

A short time later, officers found a suspect who matched the description of the offender, police said. The juvenile was taken into custody, and after further investigation, charged with attempted vehicular hijacking, according to police. He was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center where a detention hearing was held.
