Cal women escape with 74-71 win over Washington State

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Kristine Anigwe scored 27, Mikayla Cowling hit the go-ahead 3 with 5.2 seconds left and California escaped with a 74-71 win over Washington State on Friday night.

Cowling, along with Courtney Range, added 18 points and Asha Thomas handed out 10 assists for Cal (11-9, 2-7 Pac-12). The Golden Bears snapped a five-game losing streak while giving the Cougars (12-8, 3-6) their third straight loss.

Cal had not trailed until Washington State's 13-2 run made it 69-65 with 1:33 left. Borislava Hristova's high-post turnaround jumper gave the Cougars a 71-69 lead with 15.3 seconds left.

But Cowling's 3 from the right wing put the Bears back in front and Louise Brown turned the inbounds pass over to Cal at midcourt.

Anigwe made 1 of 2 free throws with 3.9 seconds, Taylor Edmonson threw away another inbounds pass for the Cougars and Range split another pair of free throws for Cal at 2.1 seconds. Even still, the Cougars' Hristova had a decent look from 25 feet that would have tied at the buzzer.

Alexys Swedlund had a career-best 16 points for Washington State. Hristova added 15 points, Brown 14 and Mariah Cooks 10.
