Cheap jokes, hammy acting infest alien invasion comedy 'Lazer Team'

The cheap and cheesy science-fiction comedy "Lazer Team" sets its intergalactic sights so lowbrow that its infantile humor and wide-eyed, hammy acting almost succeed as a parody of Marvel superhero bonding films.

But not quite.

Turns out some friendly aliens are sending our government officials a special Iron Man-styled "power suit" to Earth so our chosen champion fighter will have a fair chance against an evil alien intent on challenging him in a mano-a-thingo battle for our planet.

Four bumbling bumpkins accidentally shoot down the arriving spacecraft with fireworks. Then, while exploring the wreckage, each guy becomes genetically connected with a different part of the suit. (Apparently, the aliens read ancient Greek mythology because the suit comes equipped with the same four weapons the Greek gods bestowed upon Perseus.)

Deputy Hagen (Burnie Burns) gets welded to a big shield. Clodhopper Herman (Colton Dunn) receives boots that turn him into the Flash. Doofus Woody (Gavin Free) wears a helmet that gives him instant knowledge. Clueless Zach (Michael Jones) connects to a super blaster.

"Lazer Team" (see? They can't even spell their superhero name) comes loaded with more explosions than dialogue, lots of brainless clichés (including the ever-popular group scream), plus the lines "My bad!" "That's gotta hurt" and "This is not a game" (three times).

One of the training exercises for the men - recruited to replace buff Earth champion Adam (Alan Ritchson) - consists of shooting tennis balls into their crotches. It's that kind of unpretentious appeal to the common denominator.
