Learn about bison's return to Illinois at Lake County event

Jeff Walk, director of science for the Illinois Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, will be the speaker at the Feb. 1 meeting of the Lake County Audubon Society, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Libertyville village hall, 118 W. Cook Ave.

Walk will explain the reintroduction of bison at the Nachusa Grasslands last fall in Lee County and how scientists are monitoring the effects. Bison grazing and the effects they have on the prairie with their hoofs and horns promotes biodiversity and helps a range of wildflowers, plants, insects and amphibians to flourish.

Walk also serves on the board of directors for Illinois Audubon Society and the Illinois Endangered Species Protection Board, and is a past president of the Illinois Chapter of The Wildlife Society.
