Deputies, police dog find drugs in Waukegan man's car, authorities say
The work of two Lake County sheriff's deputies and a canine officer named Diesel on Monday in Beach Park led to multiple drug and gun charges against a Waukegan man, authorities said Thursday.
Deputy Justin Hill stopped a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo about 5 p.m. Monday in the area of North Sheridan Road and Paddock Avenue and noticed the smell of marijuana, police said.
Deputy Craig Somerville and his canine partner, Diesel, then arrived at the scene. According to a news release, the deputies and the dog found inside the vehicle: 29 individually packaged bags of heroin weighing more than eight grams; three individually packaged bags of crack cocaine weighing more than one gram; and another bag of cocaine weighing more than one gram. Additionally, they found a loaded .40-caliber handgun with the serial number defaced, authorities said.
Jamar D. Neyland, 28, of the 500 block of North Avenue, was charged with armed violence, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of ammunition by a felon, possession of a defaced firearm, two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Neyland is being held at the Lake County jail on $250,000 bail. He's expected in court again at 9 a.m. Feb. 1.
