Aurora man pleads guilty, gets 6 years for sex assault

A 42-year-old Aurora man was sentenced to six years in prison after admitting to sexually assaulting a girl younger than 13 over an eight-year span.

Herminio Umana, of the 7S300 block of Midfield Drive, Aurora, was set for a jury trial Monday on felony charges of predatory criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and misdemeanor charges that he showed the girl a pornographic movie.

Umana was accused of assaulting the girl - whom he knew - from March 2005 to September 2013, according to Kane County court records.

Umana was arrested in mid-October 2013.

In exchange for the guilty plea to predatory criminal sexual assault, prosecutors dismissed other charges, records show. Kane County Judge John Barsanti accepted the plea agreement Friday.

Umana, who also must pay $2,050 in fines and court costs, faced up to 30 years in prison.

"We reviewed the facts and this was the appropriate move for him to make, to accept the state's offer," defense attorney David Camic said.

Umana must register as a sex offender upon his release from prison and serve 85 percent of his sentence.
