More than 600 Attend 21st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast

More than 600 attendees listened to comments from keynote speaker Arnette R. Hubbard, Ph.D., Judge of the Cook County Circuit Court, at the 21st Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast hosted by COD and Benedictine University. The breakfast, co-sponsored by Nicor Gas, honors the legacy of the renowned civil rights leader and celebrates the diversity of community colleges. Click here to view more photos from this event.

Keynote speaker Hubbard has received the Clarence Darrow Award in recognition of her contributions to social justice, was also presented the Obelisk Award for education and community service. She was the first woman inducted into the Scroll of Distinguished Women Lawyers by the National Bar Association and in 2009 was the recipient of the Margaret Brent Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Bar Association.

In addition to the Hubbard's keynote speech, the breakfast included a performance by Executive Director and Lead Instructor for the Spoken Word Academy of Chicago, Keith M. Kelley, as well as the results of the MLK scholarship competition. COD students Yajaira Baez (La Grange Park) and Yuliya Guydeychuk (Wheaton), along with two students from Benedictine University, were recognized for their winning essays, which detailed how Dr. King's ideals have made a direct impact on their lives. Both College of DuPage students will receive $1,000 for their efforts.
