Fox Valley Robotics looking for event volunteers to make a difference

Fox Valley Robotics/Batavia Robotics is looking for volunteers for upcoming events which are hosted in Batavia. They are looking for volunteers of college age or above who can communicate well with kids and like to have fun.

Referees are needed to score the floor competitions. Referees will be given training and materials in order to come up to speed on this year's game. Matches are quick-paced and a keen eye for following the rules is a necessity. The time commitment the day of the competition is from approximately 7:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Judges will meet with the teams. You don't need to be technical to be a judge. If you are, that's great. The interview process is done in the morning. It is about 10 minutes with questions related to who the teams are and what their robot is capable of doing. After the interview process, you will deliberate with the other judges, visit the teams on the competition floor and the pit areas, and then come back for final deliberation. A set of judged awards with certain criteria will be determined by the judges group. Judges will be provided training and materials.

The time commitment the day of the competition is from approximately 7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Teams come in from all around the state and are middle school or high school level. The events are held at Rotolo Middle School, 1501 S. Raddant Road, Batavia.

The first date is Saturday, Jan. 30, and the next one is Saturday, March 5. One week prior to either event an overview session will be held. The week of the event is the preparation and reviewing the materials.

By volunteering for either of these events, you are helping the generation of tomorrow and will make a difference for these teams and the kids.

Volunteer interest form can be filled out at www.foxvalleyrobotics.com/volunteer. If you have questions, direct them to info@foxvalleyrobotics.com.

Batavia Robotics is a nonprofit organization which has been around the area since 2002. In 2007 to offer the program and incorporate kids from multiple communities, the name of Fox Valley Robotics was added. Today, more than 200 kids participate in three divisions of robotics. The LegoWolves Division is for the first- to third-graders, the LegoDogs Division is for fourth- to eighth-graders, and the Coyotes Division is for eighth- to 12th-graders.
