Libertyville and Vernon Hills Artists Celebrate Shakespeare Exhibition this February

The David Adler Music and Arts Center celebrates the First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare, a national traveling exhibition organized by the Folger Shakespeare Library and hosted by the Lake County Discovery Museum, with a month-long exhibition of art inspired by Shakespeare, and a genre-bending concert, "Shakespeare Meets Song" by Libertyville native Ellen Williams, and Jen Vanselow.

"There's so much to love about Shakespeare!" says Karen Altschul, a Vernon Hills artist who has three Ophelia-inspired pieces in the February exhibition. "He created so many characters, and so many classic lines that are still used today. It never gets old for me, and I've been really inspired by the First Folio and Brush up Your Shakespeare exhibitions."

Brush Up Your Shakespeare is a national juried art show curated by the David Adler Music and Arts Center to celebrate the First Folio's visit to Lake County.

Brush Up Your Shakespeare features visual art inspired by Shakespeare's words. This exhibition is free and family-friendly. A free opening reception celebrating the 20 participating artists will be held Friday, February 5th from 6-8pm. Visit the exhibition Monday through Thursday, from 9am - 8pm, and on Saturdays from 9am - 2pm. Brush Up Your Shakespeare continues through February 29th.

"Shakespeare Meets Song," on February 27th at 7pm is genre-bending celebration of songs inspired by the Bard. Performers Ellen Williams and Jen Vanselow studied music together at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.

"I've always loved the Adler Center, it has a very special place in my heart. And to combine this beautiful place with the wondrous works of Shakespeare, that's exciting," says Ellen Williams.

"It is so important to keep Shakespeare alive and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to share in the celebration of the First Folio exhibit at the beautiful David Adler Music and Arts Center," adds Jen Vanselow. Vanselow and Williams will perform five sets of music including works by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Gerald Finzi, The Barenaked Ladies, and Rufus Wainwright. Tickets are available at www.adlercenter.org. Early booking is recommended, as space is limited.
