Christopher, Goldman Hurley, Stothoff up for Wheeling's Hall of Fame

Newest members of the Wheeling High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted this Saturday at halftime of the Wildcats boys basketball varsity game.

Joining the school's elite company will be Class of 2016 inductees Jim Christopher, Nancy Goldman Hurley and Tom Stothoff.

The ceremony will be at approximately 6:45 p.m. and a reception will be held in the cafeteria after the game.

The Wildcats will tip off against Hersey at 6 p.m.

Here is a look at the newest inductees:

Jim Christopher: The father of the Wheeling's girls tennis, Christopher was a coach and mentor to the tennis community at Wheeling for 40 years.

He started as an assistant coach in the girls program.

After nine years, he was hired to take over the program as the varsity coach, a position he held for 31 years.

He coached many MSL conference champions and medalists, as well as multiple sectional medalists and IHSA state qualifiers.

Christopher was also very involved in Wheeling's boys tennis program and served as the varsity coach for eight years.

In total, he coached 70 seasons of tennis at Wheeling, making him one of the longest-serving coaches in the history of the school.

He was inducted into the Illinois State Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame in January of 2016.

Nancy Goldman Hurley: Goldman-Hurley is one of the most decorated track and field athletes in the history of Wheeling. She was an eight-time medalist at the IHSA state meet, helping Wheeling to second-place finishes in 1986 and 1987.

Goldman-Hurley finished sixth in the 100 and was a member of the 4 x 400 relay that placed finished fourth in 1986.

In 1987, she placed fifth in the 100, and her 800 meter relay team was second.

At the 1989 state meet, Goldman-Hurley medaled in four events (second in the 400, 200, and 100-meter runs, and she was part of the 800 medley relay that took third).

She was also a 14-time sectional champion and member of three sectional championship teams. She still holds the record for the most Mid-Suburban League titles with 14 and is still the current MSL record holder in the 200-meter run.

She was a member of four MSL championship teams and holds eight school records.

Tom Stothoff: Stothoff was an outstanding two-sport athlete at Wheeling. He was a three-year varsity starter in baseball and considered one of the best basketball players in school history as a four-year starter.

He finished as the school's second all-time leading scorer with 1,299 points. He also finished as the all-time leader in assists (522) while grabbing 626 rebounds.

A three-time Hardwood Classic all-tourney selection, Stothoff was also a two-time all-area and all-conference selection.

He was named to the all-state honorable mention list twice.

Women's volleyball

University of New Orleans freshman Lane Hindenburg (Fremd) was named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's honor roll. Athletes have to have a minimum 3.0 and be nominated by their academic advisor to be considered.

Hindenburg will be competing in sand volleyball this spring.

• Prospect senior Mercedes Walter will continue her volleyball career at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

The USMMA is one of five Federal Academies. Walter received her appointment to the academy in January 2016 and will join the Mariners volleyball program as a defensive specialist.

Walter distinguished herself at Prospect this year by having 100 percent serving accuracy.

She has lettered in two sports at Prospect and is an all-academic senior athlete, a member of the National Honor Society and honor roll.

Completion of the MMA's intensive four year regimental and academic curriculum (includes three trimesters at sea) leads to a bachelor of science degree, a US Merchant Marine officer's license as an engineering officer and a commission in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Lacrosse

The Arlington Falcons Lacrosse Club is looking for experienced and new players for the 2016 season.

The club will field both varsity and junior varsity teams. Teams are group by both age and ability level. The majority of the players are from District 214 but all high school-aged players are welcome.

Last season, the first while working in partnership with the Arlington Heights Park District, the club was provided a new home field at Hersey High School.

The Falcons are an independent club and will be competing against other high school boy's lacrosse clubs throughout the state.

An informational meeting will be held Saturday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. in the meeting room at Pioneer Park (500 S. Fernandez Ave., Arlington Heights).

Women's basketball

Millikin senior Alyssa Saklak (Schaumburg) led the Big Blue with 11 points in a 63-47 loss to visiting North Park.

Men's track and field

Augustana senior Ethan Koch (Prospect) won the mile in 4:20.71 at the Sol Butler Invitational in Dubuque, Iowa.

Augustana won four events and scored a total of 150.5 points to defeat second place Dubuque (109) by 41.5 points.

Vikings sophomore Evan Murphy (Buffalo Grove) took fifth at 43 feet, 3inches in the triple jump.

Women's track and field

Freshman Ashley Talken (Wheeling) cleared 10-1 to take third place in the pole vault at the Sol Butler Invitational in Dubuque, Iowa. Augustana was fourth with 71.5 points in the invite.

Softball

Loyola Academy is looking for junior varsity softball head coach.

The applicant should have coaching or playing experience in softball at the high school level or higher.

The applicant should have a bachelor's degree, and either be a certified teacher or ASEP certified.
