Burlington Central's Ross joins 1,000 club

Burlington Central senior Kayla Ross became the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points Tuesday night when she scored 26 points in the Rockets' 60-17 Big Northern East win over North Boone.

Ross joins Jenna Real, Cindy Hilbrich, Jordan Maisto and current teammates Sam Pryor and Shelby Holt as BC girls basketball players in the 1,000-point club.

"It was very nerve-racking for me," said Ross, who scored her 1,000th point on a free throw with 48 seconds left in the game. "I was 25 points away and that's a big number but my teammates getting me the ball and wanting me to get my 1,000th point was very exciting for me. Getting this is really a big deal for me and I'm so happy."

Ross, who has become more of a defensive stopper than a scorer for the Rockets, didn't really start thinking about the possibility of scoring 1,000 points until Pryor reached the milestone last year and then Holt did it earlier this season.

"I realized I was getting closer and closer and I might be able to do this," said the Olivet Nazarene recruit. "I've worked really hard and I'm really proud but I couldn't have done it without my teammates."

The win was also BC's 45th straight in BN-East play.

Pryor added 11 points to the win for the Rockets (15-2, 7-0) while Becca Gerke had 10 and Holt 8.

South Elgin 66, West Chicago 44: Teagan Pompa scored 16 points, Emmy McIntosh had 11 and Bridgette Williams added 10 to lead the Storm (15-5, 3-2) to their eighth straight win in this Upstate Eight Valley game.

Wheeling 43, Jacobs 37: Talia Surges had 8 points and Carly Sidor added 7 for Jacobs (7-12) in this nonconference loss.

Streamwood 54, Elgin 49: In the Upstate Eight River, Jenejah Williams scored 24 points and added 14 rebounds and 4 blocked shots to lead the Sabres (4-16, 2-5). Becky Roncone added 11 points and Maddie Exline 9 for Streamwood. Alisha Panthier had 20 points, Tianna Stewart 10 and Raechel Untalan 9 for Elgin (2-18, 0-6).
