Health, disability advocates to discuss veterans' issues

Local veterans and health advocates will be in attendance at state Rep. Michelle Mussman's, D-Schaumburg, Veterans Roundtable from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Trickster Art Gallery, 190 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg, to discuss how we can better provide for our military members when they return home.

"As we continue to look for ways to better provide for our veterans, we must receive direct input from those men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our country," Mussman said.

"We need to protect funding for veterans and the services they deserve, and I will continue my efforts to ensure they have the necessary resources."

Mussman has invited local veterans to meet with her and representatives from the Health & Disability Advocates (HDA) to talk about services that veterans need, how we can make them more efficient and accessible, as well as the increasing role of the National Guard.

The HDA will talk about the Illinois Warrior to Warrior program they sponsor alongside the National Guard, which is aimed at bridging the gap between military service and civilian life for veterans who are struggling through the transition.

Through the Warrior to Warrior Program, select veterans are chosen to serve as volunteer veterans from a variety of veteran service organizations. Warriors in the program receive training in communication skills and community resources from the Illinois National Guard and HDA.

"These men and women laid it all on the line so we can enjoy the freedoms that this country offers," Mussman said. "I would like to continue providing them with the services they deserve, and discuss other issues so we can work together to find solutions."
