Buffalo Grove tops in Lake Forest field

Buffalo Grove's girls basketball team won its fifth game in four days and won the championship of the Martin Luther King tournament at Lake Forest High School on Monday.

After a Mid-Suburban East victory over Prospect on Friday night, the Bison came back with two wins on Saturday and Monday to go 4-0 in the MLK event.

The Bison finished the tourney on Monday with victories over Deerfield (79-40) and Lakes (54-42).

For the second time in three games, senior Sammy Stejskal connected for a career-high 31 points, netting 13 field goals (including three 3-pointers).

Classmate Amanda Kowalski added 11, followed by Georgette Topalis (9) and Natali Dimitrova (7).

Stejskal also led BG against Lakes with 17, followed by Maddie Welter (9), Topalis (6) and Kowalski (6)

"It was a good weekend," said Bison coach Steve Kolodziej, whose club (17-4, 5-0) visits Hersey (17-3, 4-1) in Friday's Mid-Suburban East showdown.

"We had a lot of players step up as teams continue to try and find ways to limit some of our top players."

Kowalski's 11-point effort against Deerfield included a 3-pointer in each of the first three quarters.

"Amanda had a great day," Kolodziej said. "She finished around the hoop and knocked down some big shots. She did a good job playing defense as well."

Dimitrova was a force on the boards.

"She rebounded extremely well," Kolodziej said. "And Georgette (Topalis) continues to play good defense and bring a ton of energy to our team. A lot of good things were evident."

Schaumburg 51, McHenry 39: Mallory Gerber scored a game-high 17 points followed by teammates Laura O'Connell (13) and Paige Alt (9) as the host Saxons improved to 12-7 with the nonconference win.

Alt had three 3-pointers while Gina D'Orazio and O'Connell each had one.

Saxons Kayla Patterson (4-of-4), Maya Bowens (2-of-2) and O'Connell (2-of-2) were all perfect at the free throw line.

St. Viator 54, Lake Forest Academy 41: St. Viator evened its record at 10-10 with a victory at the Fenton Season's End Tourney in Bensenville.
