Judson marks MLK Day with rousing chapel service

It was standing room only Monday for Judson University's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day chapel service at its Elgin campus.

A tradition for the past dozen years, the service featured the choir, musicians and pastor of Second Baptist Church of Elgin. Herrick Chapel, which normally seats 600 people, was packed to capacity, spokeswoman Mary Dulabaum said.

"We just pulled out the pews and put chairs in," she said.

Second Baptist Church has participated in the celebratory service for more than a decade. The Rev. Nathaniel Edmond, a member of the Judson board of trustees, led the worship.

Edmond dubbed the service "a high-energy praise party" with "music from one of the best choirs in the Fox Valley."

He spoke about the church's 150th anniversary of being founded by a group of ex-slaves from Franklin County, Alabama.

The event also served as a welcome for prospective students participating in an overnight Preview Day event on campus.
