Literacy Volunteers is looking for tutors

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley needs volunteers who can help Tri-Cities residents speak English and assimilate to life in the community.

A free tutor training workshop will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 18-27, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

The workshop will teach residents how to tutor adults in English and discuss the problems adults face when they know little about American norms and customs. Once you complete training, you will be matched with one adult learner and teach one hour per week. Staff members will provide continuing support.

No prior teaching experience is necessary. Volunteers do not need to know a second language. According to learners, the most successful tutors are patient, good listeners and give practical information.

You will meet for one hour each week at a time and public location that is convenient. Most volunteer tutors meet with their students at the St. Charles, Batavia, Geneva or Town & Country public libraries. Other meeting locations are also available.

To register or for information about the workshop, visit www.lvfv.org or call (630) 584-4428.
