Dundee-Crown handles Jacobs

Dundee-Crown saved its best for last.

The Chargers broke open a close game in the fourth quarter, outscoring Jacobs 15-4 during the final 8 minutes in producing a 40-26 win in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball action in Algonquin Thursday night.

"Our pressure defense all night was outstanding," said D-C coach Sarah Miller. "We did a great job of moving our feet, We made very smart decisions in the fourth quarter and didn't force our options."

A driving layup by Kerri Healy pulled Jacobs (6-11, 2-3) to within 3 of D-C at 25-22 with 42 seconds left in the third quarter but Healy's basket would be the last points the Golden Eagles would score for over 7 minutes.

Connecting on 3 baskets along with being a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, the Chargers began the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run. Sophomore Kennedy White collected a pair of baskets and 2 free throws for 6 points and Melissa Barker had a layup basket and a pair of free throws for 4 points as D-C (11-12, 3-3) turned a slim 3-point lead after 3 quarters into a 37-22 advantage with 2 minutes left in the game.

Jacobs, which misfired on its first 8 shots of the final quarter, broke the scoring drought as Heather Hoffmann canned a 10-footer in the lane to make the score 37-24 with 1:24 remaining in the contest.

Barker (two 3-pointers) and Allison Michalski (11 rebounds, 4 assists) paced the Chargers with 11 points apiece.

"It is always great to beat Jacobs," said Michalski. "We played as a team and we played consistently. We did a good job defensively of stopping their breaks. We continue to get better every game. "

White added 10 points for the winners, 8 in the fourth quarter.

"Coach stresses to me in practice to shoot the ball with confidence," said White. "If I had an open shot I didn't hesitate and shot the ball."

Jacobs, which made 12-of-40 shots from the floor for 30 percent, connected on only 2-of-10 from 3-point range for 20 percent.

The Golden Eagles, who committed 22 turnovers, were led by Teaghan Richman with 5 points.

"D-C is a very tough team and they provided some match up problems for us," said Jacobs coach Joe Benoit. "The effort was good we just didn't make enough shots."
