Woodlands' summer program to include middle school girls

The summer school program begun last year at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, the all-girls college prep high school in Lake Forest, has been expanded this year to include middle school students in some activities.

While most offerings are for high school-age students, girls entering sixth through eighth grade in the fall can register to join in two of the enrichment classes: All-girls Shakespeare Boot Camp and Service With a Smile, held June 20 to July 1.

Boot camp participants will explore and stage "The Tempest," one of Shakespeare's most enduring dramas. Service With a Smile offers students a unique opportunity to work side-by-side providing much-needed help to local nonprofit organizations by volunteering at a different site each day.

Summer school classes are open to Woodlands Academy students or any female student in the appropriate grade. The school is offering a semester of high school credit for classes in English, science, theology, fine arts, math and social studies June 13 to July 1. Taking a class for credit in the summer can help free up time for schedules in the regular school year.

High school enrichment classes in ACT preparation, foreign languages, math and English are offered June 20 to July 1, while sports camps for basketball, field hockey and volleyball will be June 13-17 at Woodlands Academy.

For a complete listing of summer school classes and to register online, visit www.woodlandsacademy.org/summerschool. Registration and full payment must be received by Friday, May 6.

If registration does not meet minimum requirements (usually five students), the class will be canceled and all fees paid will be refunded.

Founded in 1858, Woodlands Academy is an independent Catholic college preparatory day and boarding high school for young women. It's part of a worldwide network of Sacred Heart Schools that spans the United States and 40 other countries.

A nonprofit, Woodlands Academy's identity is rooted in St. Madeleine Sophie Barat's desire to inspire young hearts and minds to excel, to lead lives of integrity and to serve.
