Create valentines for veterans in Palatine

On Monday, Jan. 18, Palatine Park District's Service Committee will be hosting a Valentines for Veterans event as part of the National Day of Service. This third annual card making event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Falcon Park Recreation Center, Golden Eagle Room, 2195 N. Hicks Road, Palatine. Cards made by community members will be donated to area veteran hospitals for distribution for Valentine's Day.

This year's event will include a special appearance by Hairy Pawter. Hairy Pawter is Chicago's most famous dog, winning over 40 pet costume contests in the past year. He has been featured on WGN TV, ABC 7 News, on Gerri Willis's show on Fox Business News, and has appeared in Chicago area newspapers numerous times. Hairy is also a model and has appeared in national advertising and soon he will be starring in a new movie being filmed in Hollywood.

Best of all, Hairy is a registered Therapy Dog with TD Inc. and he frequently visits people in assisted living communities and in hospitals to help them feel better. He likes to be petted and he loves to give "kisses," and sometimes he'll even do a few tricks to entertain everyone. Hairy always puts smiles on everyone's faces.

Members of the community are invited to stop by for the entire event, or just drop in to make a card or two. All supplies will be provided and all ages are welcome to attend this event. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This event is free, but registration is required. Registration can be completed online at www.palatineparks.org using code 140170-01 or in person at Community Center, Birchwood Recreation Center, or Falcon Park Recreation Center.
