How the library can help you fulfill your new year resolutions

"And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been."

The words of acclaimed poet and novelist Rainer Maria Rilke certainly give us pause to think. What can you do with this clean slate that is 2016? Four full seasons lie ahead. Will you let another year pass by without aiming for your dreams? Will you say "I wish I could go there, learn that, take bold steps toward my goal, acquire a new skill?" Or … will you grab hold of 2016 with the determination to be transformed?

At the Schaumburg Township District Library, you will find a selection of transformation-rich opportunities large enough to propel almost any dream, from whimsical to practical. Whether you want to climb Mt. Everest, learn Portuguese, lose weight, pursue spiritual growth, repair a broken relationship or end the year debt free, the library has books, programs, classes, software and more to get you on your way.

According to the results of a popular survey popping up on the Internet, many of us have resolved to "enjoy life to the fullest" this year. But … enjoying life means different things to different people. For many, it is intricately woven into several of the other top resolutions: live healthier, spend more time with family and friends, save more/spend less, and pay down debt. What does "living life to the fullest" mean for you? Think about it, then hit the library's website or visit the Central Library in Schaumburg or branches in Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park.

Check out books/audiobooks or DVDs on your "enjoy life" topics. Ask about websites or software programs that might get you heading in the right direction. But don't stop there! This is a goal, after all - a resolution that really means something to you. Peruse the STDL Program Guide to see if upcoming programs or classes, most of which are free, can jump start your plan. If you are targeting travel, health, education, or new skills, you'll find plenty of resources at the library. Hoping to find your first job, or change careers in 2016? The library has workshops, reference materials, websites, classes, and even one-on-one assistance for writing resumes and cover letters. With enhanced interview skills and a professional-looking resume, you're sure to have an edge on the competition.

If your resolutions involve improving your financial situation, don't miss programs like "Financial Aid and Managing College Costs" in February, or "A Common Sense Guide to Financial Success" in March. April will bring Money Smart Week to the library, complete with a variety of free financial programs targeting investing, estate planning and Social Security, among other topics. Of course, books and DVDs on a plethora of financial topics are available any time the library is open. Visit the 332 section of the second floor book stacks or Audiovisual area to find valuable information on saving for retirement or college, investing, the stock market, buying a new home, getting out of debt, or managing your money for whatever your future might hold.

Maybe your new year's goals are of the make-a-difference-in-the-world variety. The library can help with that, too. STDL librarians may not be able to answer every question, but they can lead you to appropriate resources or experts. Whether you want to sponsor a child, join the military or Peace Corps, bring clean water to an impoverished village, or teach others to read, you can begin with important insight and information obtained from the library. Simply call or visit the Reference Desk on the second floor, where a librarian will happily assist you.

What will your 2016 look like? The answer depends on you. Come to the library, either in person or at www.schaumburglibrary.org, to start a journey that will end with fulfilled resolutions before the emergence of 2017.
